Summer Bat Mist-netting Technician

Pittsburgh Wildlife & Environmental, Inc. (PWE) is seeking summer mist-netting technicians for Indiana bat and northern long-eared bat surveys in the eastern United States.  PWE is an environmental consulting firm located just southwest of Pittsburgh, PA. We specialize in endangered species surveys, aquatic resource identification and permitting, and agency consultation for land development and resource extraction projects.

This is a seasonal position lasting from May 15 – August 15, 2025.  Most of the work will require out of town travel for multiple, consecutive seven-day work weeks.  Mist-netting takes place outdoors, at night, and typically in remote forested locations.  Responsibilities include helping to set up equipment, removing bats from the nets, weighing and measuring captured animals, and various other fieldwork related tasks.

Job Qualifications:

  • Must be able to carry survey equipment weighing up to 50lbs over rugged terrain, often during inclement weather.
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be able to make it to and from our Pittsburgh, PA office with their own vehicle.
  • Candidates with experience and knowledge of the outdoors and native plants/animals are preferred but not required.
  • Must have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be responsible, organized, and punctual.
  • Must be able to pass a fit for duty test.
  • The rabies pre-exposure vaccine series is required for handling bats. If you have received the 2-shot series, make a note of it in your resume/cover letter along with current rabies antibody blood titer results.  If not, PWE will require you to get the 2-shot series prior to May 15, 2025.  The cost of the shots will be reimbursed up to $1,100 at the end of the summer field season, which could be as late as August 15, 2025.  If you do not work the entirety of the summer field season, you will not be reimbursed.

Staff Scientist

Pittsburgh Wildlife and Environmental, Inc. (PWE) is seeking an entry level staff scientist to assist with ArcGIS data collection and analysis, wetland and stream delineations, Indiana bat habitat assessments, environmental permitting, and bat mist-net surveys.  PWE is an environmental consulting firm located just southwest of Pittsburgh.  We specialize in aquatic resource identification and permitting, endangered species surveys, and agency consultation for land development and resource extraction projects.

This is a permanent, full-time position.  A majority of the work is located within the tri-state area but summer work could require travel outside of the tri-state area for extended periods of time.  The successful candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively in a team setting. Excellent verbal communication skills are required along with the willingness to travel and work extended hours in the field. Previous experience is not required for this entry level position.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Biology
  • Candidates with experience and knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Field Maps are required.
  • Candidates with experience and knowledge of the outdoors and native northeast plants/animals are preferred.
  • Rabies pre-exposure vaccine series preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with bats or wetlands preferred but not required.
